The Monument

“This heap is a witness, and this pillar is a witness, that I will not go past this heap to your side to harm you and that you will not go past this heap and pillar to my side to harm me.” – Genesis 31:52, NIV

Jacob had worked with his uncle Laban for years. But when he noticed his uncle’s attitude was changing for the worst, he consulted his wives, Laban’s two daughters. He explained that God was calling him home.

Both Leah and Rachel agreed to journey with Jacob and the rest of their household to Jacob’s hometown. But Jacob was smart and he waited to leave until Laban was gone.

This head start gave him a slight advantage but as soon as Laban knew that his daughters had left, he followed after Jacob and caught up with him. There, Laban shared that God had warned him to not to harm Jacob.

The two men built a monument to signify an agreement. Neither would ever cross the boundaries of their land to harm the other. Then Laban left in peace.

Sometimes, family members have difficulty getting along. You may have sought to repair the relationship multiple times only to be met with defeat. In these situations, it’s OK to set up healthy boundaries that protect both you and your loved one. If it’s God’s will, He will restore your relationship in time.

God, please show me how to set healthy boundaries with (name). I’m not sure what to do or how to start. I ask that You would restore this relationship to me again. In the meantime, give me grace to endure. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
